Hiya and welcome to my blog! My name is Jessica and I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to write in my bio section. This site, a collection of my writings and musings, is a project I started because I quit my job as a software engineer in September 2019. For the Cliff’s Notes version of how I got here, see: this post.
I was born and raised in the high desert of Northern New Mexico. I moved to Santa Cruz, California to attend college at UCSC (Go Banana Slugs!), and then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in the Fall of 2008 for grad school. I’ve been here ever since. I live that East Bay life with my boyfriend, a growing collection of house plants, and Chuck & Larry (our two ailing tomato plants that live on the balcony).
Career-wise, I’ve been a custom framer, a dishwasher in my university dining hall, a legal intern and law clerk, an attorney, and a software engineer.
I’m a musician and my current project has me on electric violin/guitar/vocal duties in Doom Metal/Post-rock band DAXMA.
I like ice cream, honesty, empathy, deep conversations, cute animals, and quality heavy metal music. I dislike olives on pizza, entitlement, passive-aggressive behavior, pointless small talk, and Maroon 5.
I have the immense privilege and good fortune to be able to take some time off and I’m going to explore a multitude of things during this period of funemployment. Diving deeper into my existing hobbies. Exploring new ones. Taking on some volunteering opportunities. And I’m going to write about my experiences along the way! Welcome to sabbatical season.
